Poly Cystic Ovarian syndromePolycystic ovarian syndrome - PCOS is a hormonal condition which presents with a collection of symptoms, including menstrual irregularities, anovulation (failure to ovulate), facial hair, acne, hair loss, weight gain, caused by and abnormal insulin metabolism and oestrogen and testosterone dominance. PCO syndrome responds very well to treatment with natural medicine, as conventional / pharmaceutical medicine does not treat the underlying cause, using the oral contraceptive pill to induce an artificial period, rather than treating the underlying insulin resistance and oestrogen dominance. Ultrasound is the conventional investigative and diagnostic procedure for PCO syndrome, however this can often produce a false positive, so it is important to combine specific pathology tests. Causes of PCO Syndrome Although the cause is technically 'unknown', we do know that women who have taken the oral contraceptive pill for prolonged periods of time can experience irregular or absent periods for up to 2 years post stopping. This is technically not PCO syndrome and like PCO syndrome can be treated with nutritional and herbal medicine to help rebalance your hormones. Plastics containing BPA have been linked to increasing 'bad' or xeno oestrogens in the body and a possible link to increased cases of PCO syndrome, because of its connection to oestrogen dominance. Excessive insulin production - referred to as insulin resistance, caused by a consumption of a high refined carbohydrate diet, is seen in true cases of PCO syndrome and this will drive up oestrogen levels to produce many of the symptoms associated with PCO including weight gain, irregular or cessation of periods. A diet high in trans fats found in margarine, processed foods and inferior quality cooking oils has also been linked to PCO syndrome. PCO syndrome is reversible with the right treatment and dietary modifications.
